A week in Shasta Ntn’l Forest

Arriving in the Shasta area, Kerri had planned for us to explore a particular area that she found some interesting things on her map.  Since we had a few days before the work week began we were without the constraints of needing a cell signal. That meant exploring a ton of miles off-asphalt without any real care. If there was an interesting point up ahead we went there. Then moved on to another point of interest, and so on. From ancient lava flows to camping on the banks of tiny secluded lakes hidden in the forest, we did all that we could to explore and properly “see” the area.

As we neared the beginning of Kerri’s work week, we took a few hours to drive up and down more than a few roads in search of the best spot for us. We really wanted a spot that had a view of Shasta, in lush forest, and secluded. But, this perfect spot eluded us and we settled for a no-shasta-view spot not far off the main road. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked just fine for us. Again, the dogs were able to run around and just have a good time all day. Kerri got to explore for mushrooms each day as well.

By the end of this week we will have spent three full weeks living in the forests surrounding Lassen and Shasta. That by itself is not really any huge feat, as we have spent weeks boondocking in a single area before. What made it special for us is that it was three weeks of life in territory that we continually moved about. We stayed clear of established campgrounds and spent all of our time simply driving dirt roads and stumbling on to the spots we would call home for the day or work weeks. We never had  pre-planned spot for any given day, just driving and stopping when we found a location that we liked. We have been traveling like true tramps and it has been great.
