Volcanoes National Park – Kipukapuaulu Trail

The Kipukapuaulu Trail is an easy 1.2 mile hike through the “Bird Park” portion of Volcanoes National Park.  It is an area of older vegetation surrounded by more recent lava flows from Mauna Loa. I was surprised at the trailhead signage stating that 2-3 hours were required to hike this tiny trail, but once I got started down the path I realized why; you hike very, very slowly because of the volume of worthy of photographing. While I did not time my own hike, it was coming close to a 2-hour hike when I finished up, and worth it.

You know, I’m sure they had some info on the trail, but I don’t have any memory of what types of birds they may have been.
