White Sands Ntnl Monument

As I pulled out of the Hollowman AFB area, I was only a few minutes drive away from White Sands Ntnl Monument so I popped in for a quick look before the weather chased me into Las Cruces for the night.

As it turns out, you can rent snow-sleds (or bring your own) and sled down these dunes, which looks mighty fun though my first though was to how much sand would end up in your drawers if you did the sledding. However, the dunes are not really sand, but more a powder.  It is so fine that it easily compacts into a controllable substance, like how snow compacts into a snow ball. This reduces the amount of sand that makes it into your underwear.

With the weather coming in, I did not stay long. Just long enough for a few photos and a visit to the Visitors Center. If I am around this area again, especially if Tim is with me, I will pop in again to do some serious sledding down these massive dunes.
