Granite Gap

IMG_4511A planned stop before returning to Arizona, Granite Gap is only 11 miles south off the Interstate on Hwy 80. It is BLM land that I had heard of before as a great boondocking area, and Verizon says they offer a 3G signal too, so I came out to see what it has to offer.

IMG_4505I wanted to arrive early so I could catch any animals that may decide to come out to sun-bathe in the morning. However, although it did not snow where I stayed the night last night, only 25 miles away at Granite Gap there was still a fresh helping of the white stuff. Although it was not a lot, IMG_4507it was easy to tell that the wind played a major role in how cold it was overnight. Everything in the desert had a 1 inch think coat of snow on one side. Sort of a paradox, to see cactus covered in snow.

I setup camp and laid out the solar panels to get charged up before heading out for a 2 mile hike around the area. I stuck to the dirt roads and ATV paths that weave around the desert coming across no one and no thing to speak of. A few abandoned fire pits was all that told the tale of other humans being around. Even with the mid-afternoon sun keeping me warm, the wind chapped and chilled any exposed skin. I knew that no animal in their right mind, myself excluded, would be out trying to get warm in this wind. So I headed back to camp for a long overdo bath and nap before my evening workload. I will camp here, at least  one night, before heading south-west to Douglas and Bisbee Arizona where my sights will be set, once again, on the Tucson area.
